Project I : Women of Rock
For Project I, I chose to focus on women in the rock industry. The thinking skill for this project was contextualization. I looked at the who, what, when, and where of my topic. This semester I am enrolled in English and Art. I created a website for my English product and a multi-media painting for my Art product.
I chose this project because I am a fan of rock music. As a female fan, I have noticed an imbalance as to how women are treated in the rock industry, as fans and artist. Women are simply not treated the same as men, whether it's putting them on a pedestal based off of their gender or thinking that they are not capable of being "true rock fans." I researched this misogyny and imbalance, but also the context of what some of my favorite artists are currently working on.

English
For my English product, I created a website. The website includes articles describing the context of announcements, new song releases, and tours. For example, the context of Poppy's flux tour would be the tour locations (where), tour dates (when), the performers (who), and the tour name (what).
I wrote about five different female artists and what projects they are working on or have already presented to the public. I used Weebly to create my site. I got my inspiration for my product from websites like Kerrang! and Alt Press. English Product: https://kgohnfa21wir.weebly.com/ |
Art
For my Art product, I created a multi-media painting. I used acrylic paints, matte varnish, sketch book paper, and pencil. I made my piece on canvas board.
I took a lot of time to experiment with different styles, shapes, and looked at many different artists during this process. In the end, I became majorly inspired by the music video for "Flux" by Poppy. I tried to replicate some of the color palette from the video.

A female rock artist, Poppy, and the malicious-looking moon is juxapositioned on an abstract background that portrays the emotion and concept of Poppy's music. The dark sky is a representation of the heavier topics she discusses in her music, as well as her sometimes hardcore and metal sound. The pastel, color landscape is a representation of her inspiration from Japanese culture and fashion. In the "Flux" music video, the setting is full of bright, pastel colors, which is where the inspiration for this portion of the piece. The malicious-looking moon on the corner of the piece represents the hate that women in the rock industry get. It is looking down on Poppy with an evilish grin, judging her every move.

The context of this piece would be Poppy and the moon as the "who" and the contrasting landscape as the "where". The "what" could be the representation of Poppy's concept, genre, and inspiration. The "when" could be found in the moon. The moon represents the unfair and cruel treatment of women in the rock industry, fans and artists. The "when" is seems to be never ending, as the challenges and criticism women face are continually thrown at them solely because of their gender.
